Ladakh
Institutional governance in managing natural resources in general and water resource in particular is important for sustainable growth and development and to contain climate change by limiting the carbon footprints. As such role clarity and delineation is necessary to sustain nature to its sanctity. Also sustainability via adaptation is something people in Ladakh have been adopting from past. In present scenario, concept like Ice Stupa on the line of artificial glacier is being adopted to mitigate the increasing demand for water. It was first introduced in Phyang village by Sonam Wangchuk later replicated in many other villages in Ladakh like Kulum which has not only faced water crisis but was forced to abandon its village.
Understanding the role of institutions in containing water crisis becomes inevitable in political economy of water and climate change which is threatening human existence and life on earth. Ways of sustaining nature has been developed over the period time by testing and application. Hence such ways and values needs to sustain in present political economy to ensure sustainable and holistic development of not only humans but nature as well.
